A new audio theatre piece for young people aged 11 +
Written and Directed by Nikki Kalkman
Sound Design by Kevin Murray
GraveTown is an innovation new theatre production for young people that combines binaural sound design, live performance and visual theatre.
GraveTown explores the supernatural folklore that surround ghosts, graveyards, and the afterlife. Themes that have inspired books such Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, Max Porter’s Grief is the Thing with Feathers and Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book.
GraveTown tells the story of a child that befriends a group of ghosts after a family death. Awaking one night during a WWII air raid, Peter sees a plane crash in his town's graveyard. He ventures out of his bed and into the graveyard where he discovers the destroyed remains of the airplane and a magic transistor radio. This radio allows him to hear the voice of an invisible group of ghosts that live in the graveyard.
GraveTown explore the themes of grief, unconventional family structure, transitional life events, and investigate different personal and cultural understandings of death and the afterlife. Through magic, whimsy, and playful theatricality it will ask questions such as - what happens to us after death? How do we cope with loss? And how do we make meaning in life?
GraveTown is supported by Visible Fictions and Wigtown Book Company.
GraveTown will be presented at Wigtown Book Festival in September 2024.
